If a piece of business software freezes for twenty minutes, it's a nuisance. You restart it, catch up, and the day goes on. If an installation freezes for twenty minutes during an opening night, those twenty minutes of audience are gone for good, and you lost them in front of the client and their guests.
That's the whole difference between building for a screen and building for a space, and it changes the priorities of the project. In a normal product you work on features. In an installation you work so that the moment when nothing works never comes. The tools are the same, the job is a different one.
Luckily there are only a few ways for things to break, and they keep coming back. Anyone who has set up a few exhibits knows them by heart.
The failures that actually happen
The first is the network, and it's also the most underestimated. You share the venue wi-fi with the caterers, the reception desk and four hundred guests' phones all connecting at once. During setup, at nine in the evening with three people in the room, it's perfectly fine. At seven the next day it's unusable.
Then there's power. Someone unplugs a power strip to plug in the coffee machine, or the electrician switches off a circuit to adjust a spotlight. Nobody does it out of carelessness. Dozens of people pass through a setup with no idea what's behind your panel.
Light is the third problem, for anything that uses a camera (recognition, scanning, tracking). At an event it changes all the time. The spots come on for the speech, everything dims for the screening, and at six the sun comes in through a window that was covered during the site visit.
Heat and dust work more slowly. A computer shut inside a cabinet with no airflow slows down, then switches off. It happens in the afternoon, never in the morning during rehearsals.
And finally there are people, who don't do what the flow expects. They tap twice, walk off halfway, arrive in groups, leave someone else's session open. An interaction designed for one person at a time will sooner or later meet four teenagers at once.
Degrade instead of shutting down
One rule drives every choice. When a piece is missing, the installation has to keep doing something sensible instead of showing an error.
In practice, that means the following.
Work as much as possible without the network. Content and logic live on site, and the connection is only for what can't be kept locally. Whatever has to go out, like collected data or generated content, is queued and sent when the line comes back, without anyone noticing.
Keep your own backup connection. A dedicated mobile line costs little and has saved more events than any other precaution.
Never show the public an error. If something isn't available, the starting screen or a holding content appears. The staff see the error.
Go back to the start on its own. After a period of inactivity the experience starts over. This one feature avoids half the real problems, because an interaction left halfway blocks every one after it.
Restart without anyone stepping in. If a machine switches off, it has to come back on in the right experience, full screen, with no keyboard and nobody having to log in.
The dress rehearsal
Seeing that it works isn't enough. It has to work in the conditions of that day, and the only way to know is to test on site, with the final setup.
The method is to break things on purpose. Pull the network while someone is playing and watch what happens. Cut the power to a machine and time how long it takes to get back on its feet by itself. Switch the stage lights on and off. Then have someone who knows nothing about it try the installation, without giving them instructions, and watch them without helping. Of all the tests, that's the one that finds the most problems.
Test the queue too. With one person the installation behaves one way, with twelve in line it behaves another, and a line is the normal situation in the twenty minutes after someone speaks on stage.
Who's in the room
The last line of defence is a person. On site you need someone who, without calling anyone, knows how to restart, bring the experience back to the start and tell in five seconds whether the problem is the network or something else.
It doesn't have to be a developer. A sheet with three lines, a button within reach and an indicator light only the staff can see, showing whether the system is connected and healthy. With that, a problem lasts a minute. Without it, it lasts until someone turns up.
That person has to be chosen beforehand, with the authority to act. In the chaos of an event, asking three different people "can I restart it?" costs more than the restart.
The part that's decided at the start
Almost nothing you've read here can be bolted on at the end. Working without the network, going back to the start by itself, restarting without help: these are architecture choices. Made at the beginning they cost little, a week before the event they turn into a rewrite.
For the same reason, the reliability line in an installation quote isn't an extra to cut so the total comes out right. It decides whether, on the day of the event, what you paid for is running or switched off.

The network. The venue wi-fi is shared with catering, reception and hundreds of guests' phones, and it holds up during setup but not with a full room. That's why the installation should work as much as possible without the network and have a dedicated mobile line as backup.
