Six to eight weeks is the timeframe we work to most often when a startup needs to get into the hands of real users or in front of an investor. It's a limit, and what's good about it is that it forces you to choose. Without a date every feature seems essential. With a date you find out quickly which ones are.
Rather than asking how long it'll take, ask what has to have happened by the end of week eight for the project to keep going. Users completing a flow? A number to take to a fund? A pilot with three paying customers? An MVP built to raise money is different from one built to test a price. If this stays vague, the weeks go on building a bit of everything.
What fits inside
In eight weeks, with a small team and a clear goal, you can fit a product that does one thing from start to finish and does it properly. Not a clickable prototype. Software that runs, with real users, real data and all their odd cases.
That means one complete main flow, authentication, data that stays saved, a minimal panel to see what's going on, and deployment on real infrastructure with backups switched on. If the business model involves a payment, taking the money fits too. It usually integrates faster than people fear, and without it it's hard to learn anything about price.
There's also room for the tools that tell you whether the product works. At that stage, knowing how many users reach the end of the flow and where they drop off is worth more than three extra features. It costs a few days of work and makes the decisions that follow a lot better.
What gets left out
The full admin panel, detailed roles and permissions, integrations with external systems nobody has asked for yet, a native app and a web version, notifications on every channel, translations, and the level of visual polish you'd expect from a mature product.
They're left out because they're real work, and in many cases they'll become necessary. It's just better to build them once you know which ones you need. Building them now means betting on untested assumptions, which is exactly what an MVP is supposed to avoid.
The most expensive of them is the admin panel. It's always bigger than it looks and the user never sees it. Early on you can replace it with direct access to the data and a procedure for the team, and the weeks you save go into the product.
Four decisions to make before you start
If they stay open, they eat development time from the inside.
Who decides. You need one person with the final say, for the sake of speed more than hierarchy. In an eight-week project a decision stuck for three days costs more than a wrong decision, which at least can be corrected.
What gets measured. The metric that will say whether the MVP worked has to be fixed beforehand. If you pick it while looking at the data, you'll always find a reassuring number.
Who the first twenty users are. Twenty names and surnames, not "the market". If you don't have them yet, finding them is a job to do while development is under way. Otherwise the product ships and nobody uses it.
What happens in week nine. The MVP is the beginning. You need to know who maintains it, who steps in when it breaks and what budget carries it forward. Whoever doesn't think about this in advance ends up with a live product and nobody looking after it.
How the eight weeks are split
The first week closes the definition: main flow, screens, data model and the decisions just listed. From week two development runs in short cycles, and every week there's something to open and try. A real link, not a demo described to you. It's the surest way to find a misunderstanding in week two instead of week seven.
The last two weeks aren't for adding features. They're for edge cases, messy data, the errors that only show up with real users, going to production and checking that the backups actually restore. Teams that use them to squeeze in one last thing hand over a fragile product just when the most people are looking at it.
Shortcuts that are fine and shortcuts that are dangerous
An MVP is made of compromises chosen on purpose, and it helps to know which ones you can recover from.
You can put off nearly all the polish. You can handle by hand what will later be automatic, support a single browser or a single type of device, leave some edge cases uncovered. These choices touch the surface and are cheap to fix.
Three things can't be put off. The data model, because changing it once you have users means rewriting half the product. Access security, because a mistake there turns into an incident straight away. And backups, because losing your first real data means losing your first users, who are also the hardest to win back.
In short, you can rush what people see, never what holds the rest up.
When eight weeks isn't enough
There are cases where the window is wrong. If the heart of the product is a technical problem that's still open, like a model to train, a physical device to connect or a heavy regulatory constraint in healthcare or finance, that part has to be isolated and tackled first, on its own timeline. Squeezing it into the MVP leads to discovering in week six that the piece everything rests on doesn't work.
Sometimes the opposite happens and eight weeks is too much. If the assumption to test is whether anyone would pay for this thing, you can often test it with far less and only build once you have an answer.
