The day after the event
The installation worked, people stopped, the client was happy. Then someone asks how it went and the answer is "really well, there was always a queue".
It's true, but it isn't enough. It doesn't let you compare this event with the next one, it doesn't help decide whether to do it again, and above all it doesn't tell whoever paid what they got. It's the most common reason a successful experience doesn't come back the following year. Nobody managed to defend it with anything more solid than an impression.
With a passive display you'd have to make the numbers up. When there's software in the middle, though, they already exist. They just have to be decided in advance.
What you can measure
Not everything that matters can be measured, but more can be counted than people think, and counting it doesn't mean adding anything to the visitor's experience.
The base number is completed interactions. Not people walking past, sessions that reached the end. Set next to the total attendance, it tells you what share of the audience the experience actually drew in.
Then there's the point where people stop. If the flow has three steps and half the people drop out at the second, there's a problem there: the instructions, the wait, the position. Of all the numbers it's the most useful, because it's the only one you can act on straight away, even while the event is still running.
The length of an interaction, on its own, says little. A very short average time can mean a smooth experience or one people abandon, and to tell them apart you have to cross it with how many sessions reach the end.
How things move across the day shows what nobody notices by eye. The peak after the talk on stage, the lull at lunchtime, the queue when two groups arrive together. It helps you size things the next time, meaning how many stations, where to put them and when to staff them.
If the installation produces something (an image, a text, a personalised version of some content), that material is already a result and it gets counted.
Finally there's what leaves the event with people. Shared content, contacts collected with consent, people who asked to receive what they made. It's the part that matters most to whoever put up the budget, because it keeps its value the day after.
It's decided beforehand
The typical mistake is asking for the numbers once the event is over. By then you collect whatever the system happened to record, and that's rarely what you need.
The useful conversation happens during design, and it starts from two questions. The first is who will read these numbers. A marketing director, an end client, a board deciding next year's budget all need different things. The second is what that person needs to be able to say. If the sentence is going to be "one person in three stopped to interact", you need both the interaction count and an estimate of attendance, and both have to be planned.
What comes out is a short list, three or four numbers rather than twenty, and the system is built to record them. Decided at the start, it costs very little. Afterwards there's no getting it back.
Data and people
This is where it's easy to go wrong in good faith, so it's worth saying plainly. Counting people doesn't mean profiling them.
To know how many completed interactions there were, you don't need to know who made them. At an event the useful measurement is nearly always aggregate and anonymous, and it's better to design it that way on purpose. The numbers come out cleaner too, because nobody holds back.
Things change when you collect contact details, for instance an email address to receive what someone made, or a sign-up. Then you need clear, explicit consent, a stated purpose and data handling agreed with whoever looks after data protection for the company organising the event. It gets decided before the event, with the right people, not sorted out during setup.
With cameras there's one practical rule that avoids almost every problem. Process without storing. The image is used in the moment of the experience and isn't recorded.
What to do with it afterwards
A two-page report delivered within a few days is worth more than twenty pages delivered a month later. It should hold the main numbers, the curve of the day, the point where the most people dropped out, the content produced and two or three notes on what to change next time.
That document earns its keep twice. For the client, to justify the spend to people who weren't there. And for you, at the next edition, so you don't start again from impressions. An experience that already knows, at its second edition, where people stopped has a head start before it's even designed.

How do you measure the success of an interactive installation at an event?
With a few numbers chosen before the event: interactions that reached the end compared with attendance, the point in the flow where people stop, how long interactions last and how activity moves through the day. On top of these comes what remains afterwards, such as shared content and contacts collected with consent.
When should you decide what data to collect at an event?
During design, not once the event is over. Ask who will read the numbers and what they need to be able to say, and from there pick three or four measurements for the system to record. Decided at the start they cost very little, afterwards they can't be recovered.
Does measuring an installation mean collecting visitors' personal data?
No. The useful measurement is usually aggregate and anonymous, and counting interactions doesn't require knowing who made them. If you do collect contact details you need explicit consent and a stated purpose, and with cameras the rule is to process without storing.
