A product ready for the market and a product ready for a fundraise are two different things. The first has to stand up to daily use by people who pay. The second has to make a thesis credible: that the problem exists, that you know how to solve it and that you're the team that can do it at a bigger scale.
Different goals lead to different choices about what to build. People who mix them up usually spend the weeks before the round adding features that change nothing in the conversation with the investor.
What investors look at
In practice four things count, roughly in this order.
First of all, that the product exists and works. A link that opens, a flow that gets to the end without getting stuck. The gap between a mockup and a product that runs is huge, far bigger than the one between a product with ten features and one with twenty.
Then, that somebody uses it. A few users are enough, as long as they're real and not friends. Twenty people using it whose behaviour you can watch count for more than two thousand sign-ups on a waiting list. And the question always comes: do they come back?
Third, that you know what you're measuring. You don't need an elaborate dashboard. You need to know how many come in, how many complete the main action and how many come back after a week, and to be able to explain why the numbers are what they are. A team that knows its own raw data is more convincing than one that shows charts and then can't talk about them.
Finally, that the next step is clear. What you'll do with the money, in what order, which assumption you'll test first. This is where product and plan have to match.
None of these four improves by adding features. Some get worse, because a wider product is harder to explain in ten minutes, and during a demo breadth becomes a cost.
What ruins a demo
Half-finished features. A screen that's there but does nothing is worse than a screen that isn't there. Whoever's watching will click on it, they always do, and what they find becomes the topic of the conversation. Better to take it out.
Unconvincing test data. Users called "Mario Rossi 1" (the Italian John Smith), amounts of 999 euros everywhere, identical dates. What's in the demo says how seriously you're taking the product. Filling it with realistic data takes half a day and changes the impression.
Slowness at the wrong moment. Finding out that a screen takes eight seconds to load while someone's watching is the worst that can happen. Try the demo flow on a slow connection with a few thousand records in it.
Promises written into the interface. "Coming soon" labels scattered here and there say there's more roadmap than substance. The roadmap belongs in the slides, where you can explain it.
What you can't see but still counts
Some things never appear in the demo but come out in technical due diligence. Don't cut corners on these.
Code, database and infrastructure have to be in the company's name, not in a founder's or a supplier's personal account. This check always happens, and finding it unresolved slows the round down exactly when it hurts most.
Your handling of personal data has to hold up. You don't need a multinational's apparatus. It's enough to know what data you collect, where it is, who can access it and on what legal basis (under GDPR every processing needs one).
Backups need testing at least once. A backup that has never been restored is a hope, nothing more.
And there has to be somebody able to bring the system back up if it goes down, a named person or a contract. It's a question that comes up more often than you'd think.
The last three weeks
If the round is three weeks away, spending them on new features is rarely the choice that pays off most. This usually works better. One week to make the main flow flawless, including the cases where the user makes a mistake. One week to bring real users in and watch what they do. A few days to sort out test data, speed and the two or three places where the product is still rough.
Then you rehearse the demo. Out loud, in front of someone who has never seen the product, at least three times. By the third run you always find more problems than you expected.
The technical question that always comes
Sooner or later it turns up in almost every conversation: what if you had ten thousand users tomorrow? Nobody expects the infrastructure for ten thousand users to already be there. In fact, having built it now would be a bad sign, because it would mean you'd spent money on a problem you don't have yet.
The question is there to find out how well you know your own system. The good answer is specific and honest. We know which piece would give way first, we know roughly at what threshold, we know what we'd do. Knowing where it would break is worth far more than claiming it never will, which nobody believes anyway.
Costs work the same way. Knowing what it costs today to serve one user, even as a rough estimate, is information that separates a team that has looked at its numbers from one that has only looked at its product.
After the round the hard part starts
It's the phase where most mistakes happen, so it needs saying. A product built to raise money isn't yet built to grow. The shortcuts taken to reach the demo need fixing, and soon. Between the teams that speed up after the round and the ones that get bogged down, the difference often lies in how honestly they kept the list of those shortcuts.
If the list exists, you have a plan. If it doesn't, the debt is just the same. You'll find it one piece at a time, while you're hiring and promising dates.

That the product exists and works, that someone uses it, that you know what you're measuring and that the next step is clear. None of these improves by adding features, and a wider product is also harder to explain in a ten-minute demo.
How do you prepare a product demo before a funding round?
Make the main flow flawless, bring real users in and sort out test data, speed and the roughest spots. Remove half-finished features. Then rehearse the demo out loud, in front of someone who doesn't know the product, at least three times.
What do investors check in technical due diligence?
