It happens. The event is a week away and the idea came late, or a supplier dropped out at the last minute. In situations like that we have delivered working installations in a single week. It isn't how we normally work, and it's worth saying why straight away. You get a week by giving something up, not by working faster. Knowing what you're giving up before you start is what separates a delivery that works from a disaster.
The conditions we won't start without
You need one person who makes decisions and is available every day. Seven days leave no room for a round of approvals, so someone has to be able to say yes or no within the hour, with the authority to do it.
You need a single idea. One clear interaction, no experience split into stages. Every branch you add in a window this tight costs twice what it normally would, because there's no time left to absorb surprises.
The content has to exist already. If the copy, images, logo and fonts still need to be produced, that's a parallel project with its own timeline. In most of the rushed deliveries that went badly, the delay was in the content while the software was ready.
You need access to the venue before the event, even if it's only a site visit with a network test. Without it you're betting on the least predictable environment in the whole project.
And you need to know the technical constraints from the start. Who brings the screens and at what resolution, whether there's power where it's needed, what the network is like, who the venue's technical contact is. These are day-one questions, not day-five questions.
If one of these conditions is missing, "we'll give it a go" isn't an honest answer. Better to shrink the installation until it fits the constraints, or fall back on a simpler format you know you can guarantee.
How the days are spent
Day one is for deciding and closing. One meeting, where you settle what the installation does, what happens when something goes wrong and what it won't do. From then on the scope stays put, and that rule is what makes everything else possible.
Days two to four go on building the main flow, start to finish and nothing else. No variants, no admin panels. By the evening of day four there has to be something that opens and works, even if it's ugly.
Day five is the on-site test, and it never gets skipped, not even when you're behind. Especially when you're behind. Real network, real lighting, real screens and at least five people who have never seen the project trying to use it. What comes out of it is usually different from what you expected.
Day six is for fixing whatever the test broke and building the fallback behaviour. What people see if the network drops, if an external service doesn't respond, if someone interacts in a way nobody had thought of. It's the least visible work and the part that most often saves the day.
Day seven is set-up and standing by. Set-up with time to spare, a full run-through before the doors open and one person on call with remote access for the whole event.
What gets cut, openly
A week has no room for the admin panel, the graphic polish, variants of the experience, support for every possible device, or integrations with third-party systems that need credentials from someone else, because those timelines don't depend on us.
Cutting is fine. Cutting quietly isn't. Everything that's missing goes in writing, so nobody finds out the night before. A shared list of what's been left out is the most useful tool in the whole project.
What never gets cut
When time runs short the same temptation always comes back. Skip the on-site test, or the error handling, to win half a day for features. On a project with a fixed date it's the worst trade you can make.
A missing feature is only noticed by people who knew it was supposed to be there. A frozen installation is noticed by everyone at once, at the moment it's getting the most attention. The damage has nothing to do with the time you saved.
Set-up time doesn't get cut either. The gap between installing and opening to the public is there to soak up physical surprises, like the socket that isn't there, the screen that arrives with a different mount or the lift that's in use. Whoever schedules set-up at the last possible moment is betting that none of this will happen, and usually at least one of those things does.
The real risks, in order
In our experience, the things that sink a fast delivery are, most frequent first: content arriving late, a venue network that isn't what was described, third-party hardware turning up on the day, a decision reopened halfway through the week and an external service that slows down more than expected under load.
Four out of five have nothing to do with software. There's a useful lesson in that. On a seven-day delivery, coordination weighs as much as the technical work, and someone has to own it openly.
When it makes sense
An installation done in a hurry isn't necessarily a cheap version. It's a project with a tight, honest scope, and often that's exactly what's needed. Something simple that works perfectly in front of a thousand people is worth more than something ambitious that half works.
And if the experience goes well, the next version starts from solid ground, with real data on how the public interacted. That's the best material for deciding what to add. On these projects you gain time by deciding early and putting in writing what won't be there.
